Understanding BMI
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person’s height and weight. The formula is BMI = kg/m² where kg is a person’s weight in kilograms and m² is their height in meters squared.
BMI is an inexpensive and easy-to-perform method of screening for weight categories that may lead to health problems. However, BMI is not a diagnostic tool for body fatness or health.
BMI Categories
BMI Range | Weight Status | Health Risk |
---|---|---|
Below 18.5 | Underweight | Increased risk for certain health problems |
18.5 – 24.9 | Normal weight | Lowest risk for health problems |
25.0 – 29.9 | Overweight | Increased risk for heart disease, diabetes, etc. |
30.0 and above | Obese | High risk for heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure |
Limitations of BMI
BMI does not directly measure body fat, and it may overestimate body fat in athletes or others with very muscular builds. It may also underestimate body fat in older persons or others who have lost muscle mass.
It’s important to remember that BMI is just one factor in determining overall health. Other factors such as waist circumference, blood pressure, cholesterol level, blood sugar level, and family history of disease also play important roles.
